Within the set of the 7 Habits for Effective Team Leadership that we are sharing (below I leave the list and links) is:
The Art of Being a Mentor
The best way to achieve excellence in our teams is to provide them with information and knowledge.
Sounds simple, right? However, many people feel uninformed and poorly guided by their superiors. This leads to frustration, apathy, and low effectiveness.
Acting as a mentor to those who have less experience and/or both technical and emotional competencies is the best shortcut to achieve results in less time and develop the necessary bonds with you and the company. Additionally, it helps us stay up-to-date with new tools used by the younger generation, it’s a quid pro quo and a win/win. Continuous learning is our obligation and improves us as mentors and leaders.
A few weeks ago, I provided training to the managers of a company on effective leadership and emotional intelligence, and one of the keys I shared and that generated the most interest was the use of mentoring in day-to-day life.
Understanding the definition of mentoring helps to be a better mentor:
- The process of helping, accompanying, and giving advice to a younger or less experienced person, to help them establish a vision and goals to achieve their objectives, while they grow and develop.
The key is the transfer of knowledge and experiences in a way that allows the mentee to feel empowered and self-confident. To do this, as essayist Walt Whitman said, “be curious, not judgmental”, be curious, but without judging. Ask questions that make the person analyze situations and if you have information that will help, share it.
According to various studies published in Forbes magazine, 70% of Fortune Global 500 companies have mentorship programs.
There is a correlation between greater business profitability and lower talent turnover. When the relationship between mentor and apprentice is good, the mentor plays a crucial role in the professional achievements of their apprentice, helping them to achieve better results; this increases their happiness and sense of belonging.
The role of the Mentor is:
- To advise and train: Advise, guide, and give feedback; share your experience and knowledge.
- To encourage and inspire action: offer support to try new things, analyze mistakes and their consequences, help to step out of the comfort zone; celebrate successes; help them understand when things do not go as planned.
- To recommend: Resources that will help them develop and grow, such as books, workshops, joining networking organizations, or introducing them to new contacts.
At Aprofitalents, we have been using a team coaching methodology called SKILL-EQ Methodology since 2017. It was born from the very need to help managers align with their teams in a short time. The methodology is agile, fun, and 100% effective.
Not all team leaders have the necessary personal skills such as empathy, patience, and good communication, but that doesn’t mean they can’t learn them in a short time; in my experience, it is ideal that they do it alongside their team. This way the coaching sessions are more effective and frustrations are avoided.
A leader capable of generating trust among the members of their team will have great possibilities of achieving the desired results, as they will be able to lead the change.
